Class of 2025 – Business, Basics, and Beyond

Alison Carlino
Course Number: 7
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

The Class of 2025 wants an experience when it comes to their Portrait & Sportrait Sessions. Your lighting, posing, products, and confidence need to produce a multimedia experience for these young adults. This is a flash heavy class (you’ll need to bring your gear) where Alison will push you to create in challenging locations (outside, inside, darkness, clouds, bright sun, colorful interiors, often using high speed sync) where you will learn to read the light and modify it to tell the senior’s story.

We will cover 1-2-3 lighting setups with various modifiers, gel color, fog, water, and fire. Learn modern poses for males and females that span from traditional to motion and how color conveys mood. Flipping a scene into something the eye cannot see is something Alison is known for; learn how she diagnoses the quantity, quality, color, and direction of the ambient light to create the vision. See how LED light tubes & lasers are being used for Sportraits!

If you didn’t drive to Texas School, you’ll be riding with Alison/wranglers/students. You can borrow light stands from Arlington Camera but plan to travel with your strobe heads, modifiers, and camera gear. We will have very little lecture; most of the week will be spent shooting, posing, and visiting many off site locations. As a final project, you’ll be creating a Hype Film in Animoto that blends imagery and behind-the-scenes video into a final marketing piece that you can use to showcase your work.

Business portion – Alison will cover social media marketing strategies, Class of 2025 Collections, Sportrait Collections, Media Day Collections, Volume Sports Packaging, How to Run a Sports Photo Day, and she will discuss (and have on site) the trending products from Miller’s Professional Imaging that actually sell.

This class assumes that you are already shooting on manual settings, that you have a solid understanding of the exposure triangle, and that YOU WILL BRING your strobes, modifiers, & triggers. No beginners to flash, please. Class starts earlier than what’s listed and one night will go late. There is no wasted time during this week! Lots of hands on with models/athletes. Feel free to reach out with questions. [email protected]
BONUS LECTURE – Night Skies – Milky Way, Star Trails, & Light Painting
